This c.1975 stainless steel Rolex Oyster Perpetual Military Submariner leads Dreweatts’ auction of watches, jewellery and silver in Donnington Priory on March 15.
The ‘Milsub’ is an enhanced version of the civilian Submariner – Rolex’s classic diving watch. This model was ordered by the Ministry of Defence in the early 1970s with specific requirements including fixed bars, so that the straps could not be pulled off, and sword hands for increased legibility.
The vendor was a scientific officer for a trials team at the Admiralty Underwater Weapons Establishment on Portland, Dorset, and was issued with two Rolex Submariners for use by him and his team. After the trials, the watches were locked away but months later could not be located, and the vendor had to pay for their loss. When moving laboratories, however, one of the two watches was rediscovered. It is guided here at £40,000-60,000.
