This trench map could well have been carried on the first day of the Somme: it is still mud-spattered. The German-occupied village of Montauban was one of the few targets that the British reached on July 1, 1916, captured by the Liverpool and Manchester ‘Pals’ battalions of 30th Division. The Pals had volunteered to serve alongside friends and neighbours; the impact of a single action on local communities could be catastrophic. Priced at £400 by dealership Bryars & Bryars.
