MADAM – Following your recent article about Bill Neal’s Chinese mother of pearl gaming counter made for Queen Charlotte, I was touched to read Elizabeth Cannon’s letter in response and tribute to my late husband, David Howard (Letters, ATG Nos 2291 and 2293).
It brought back happy memories of the ‘Hay Hill days’ and particularly one of the joys of antique dealing: the many interesting people and pleasurable encounters.
It is perhaps a measure of that ‘perfect gentleman’ who would never take undue advantage that when David’s personal collection of some 900 Chinese armorial mother of pearl counters departed last year to be displayed in their new home at the Reeves Center, Washington & Lee University, Virginia, it contained several Queen Charlottes and two Napoleons, but still no George II counter!
