Figuring why a specific lot did unexpectedly well is part and parcel of reviewing auctions but this oil on board lunette of a pastoral idyll below is more of a challenge than most, writes Terence Ryle.
The c.1920, 2ft x 3ft 3in (74cm x 1m) work had a Glasgow School of Art label to verso and was indistinctly inscribed Gordon Maule, a name unknown to Google. Offered at the October 25 Lyon & Turnbull (25% buyer’s premium) Decorative Arts: Design since 1860 sale, it was estimated at £500-800 but sold to an English collector at £7000.
“I couldn’t find a record of the artist but I think it is a striking work,” said auctioneer John Mackie. “It resonates with a resurgence of interest in realist art noticed at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art exhibition True to Life this summer and autumn. It featured British realistic painting in the 1920s and ’30s and was well received by critics and public.”
