From ancient Greece came this 5th century BC bronze Chalcidian helmet which is thought to have had its cheek pieces removed early in its history to suit the needs of a barbarian warrior, possibly a steppe nomad. It sold for €22,000 (£19,640).
From November 16-17 Hermann Historica (23% buyer’s premium) of Munich mounted its customary assault on the arms and armour market with no fewer than seven catalogues covering more than 6000 objects, ranging from ancient Greek helmets to military and other vehicles.
The cover girl in the latter category, by the way, was a fully restored 1944 Opel version of the Daimler Benz half-track lorry which posed for its pre-sale glamour shots by climbing effortlessly up steep embankments as if it was in the first flush of youth.
