THE ARRAN BANNER 20 YEARS AGO

National park plan

The idea for Arran to be turned into a national park was put forward by Janice Gemmel at Tuesday’s community council meeting as a result of a paper put out by Scottish Natural Heritage.

The paper is only looking for ideas and is inviting comments. So far the thinking is the Trossachs, Loch Lomond and the Cairngorm area might be made into national parks. The organisation is open to other suggested areas but pertinent comments are to be made soon. All but one of the councillors were a little bemused by the notion and appeared to have no firm feeling, nor did they know what being an official national park might entail. But Charles Fforde had very strong feelings, describing Scottish Natural Heritage as just another ‘committee-run organisation’.
