NINA PONOMAREVA, the controversial 1952 Olympic discus champion, has died at the age of 87.
The Soviet athlete was infamous for being found guilty of stealing five feathered hats from a London store in 1956. She was discharged upon payment of costs.
The trial followed Ponomareva having taken refuge in the Soviet Embassy for six weeks.
