BRITS CAN BELIEVE AGAIN
TEAM GB HEADING FOR BRAZIL FULL OF EXPECTATION, RATHER THAN HOPE
2016 PARALYMPICS, RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL, SEPTEMBER 8-17

Stef Reid: long jump contender
MARK SHEARMAN
THE GB ATHLETICS team goes into the Rio Paralympics full of confidence, writes Stuart Weir.
In London 2012 they won 29 medals, including 11 golds. At the 2015 World Championships in Doha, the haul was 32, including 13 golds. At the 2016 European Championships in Grosseto, Italy, GB took 15 golds and a total of no fewer than 56 medals.
To put this into context, at the Rio Olympics there were 47 medal events in athletics. At the Paralympics there will be 177.
That is a reduction from the 212 in the 2015 IPC World Championships, which had 30 different 100m races in 16 different classifications for men and 14 for women.
The challenge for para-athletics is to make the competition fair for the athletes, understandable for spectators and while maintaining the integrity of the event. In the amputee long jump in London Stef Reid jumped 5.28m, but finished second to Kelly Cartwright, whose distance was 4.38m.
