FORMER UK Athletics performance director Dave Collins says he is delighted to see British athletes being recognised belatedly for their successes at the 2008 Olympics.
The vast number of DQs from Beijing and London which have come as a fallout of the International Olympic Committee’s waves of retesting has reshaped the picture of many sports across the Games, in particular athletics which has now seen 30 positives.
The IOC has yet to confirm if and when the results of each event will be made official, but it is expected that the GB men’s and women’s 4x400m teams, as well as javelin thrower Goldie Sayers, will be reallocated bronze medals, taking the 2008 tally to seven.
“The first thing it makes me feel is really pleased for the athletes, coaches and support staff. It was a good performance. We thought going in there we were going to do well, and it’s nice to see them get the recognition,” said Collins, who was sacked after the team brought home just four medals from Beijing and who is now a professor at the University of Central Lancashire.
Collins says the potential addition of medals many years down the line has helped reaffirm his belief that the British athletics team had a successful Games, despite the initial negative reaction.
