ANTIGUAN sprinter Miguel Francis has seen his attempted transfer of allegiance to Great Britain hit a snag as his country’s national federation have refused to expedite the process, AW understands.
In September the AntiguaObserver reported that the 21-year-old sprinter, who ran for his country at the 2015 World Championships, had requested a transfer of allegiance to compete for Great Britain.
IAAF rules state that an athlete who has represented a member nation must wait three years following the acquisition of new citizenship until they are permitted to compete for their new country, though this period can be reduced upon agreement with the athlete’s current federation.
AW understands that the Antigua & Barbuda Athletics Association (ABAA) are standing in the way of Francis’ request, meaning he would be unable to compete in a British vest internationally until the end of 2019, by which time he will be 24 years old.
This year Francis clocked 19.88 over the 200m, making him the seventh fastest athlete in the world over the distance.
