BANK OF SCOTLAND GREAT SCOTTISH RUN

Elite start: eventual winner Callum Hawkins had Moses Kipsiro and fellow Brit Chris Thompson for company
IN THE run-up to the race, Callum Hawkins insisted he wasn’t targeting any records at the Bank of Scotland Great Scottish Run. “I am just going to put myself in the mix like I usually do and see what happens,” he said.
What ‘happened’ was a blistering run which caused many a jaw to drop – including that of the man himself.
The Scot had forced the athletics world to sit up and take notice with his impressive ninthplace finish in the Rio Olympic marathon, not to mention the performances in Frankfurt and London which got him there in the first palace.
But now, given the manner of a stunning run which saw off Ugandan defending champion Moses Kipsiro, obliterated the Scottish record (Allister Hutton’s mark of 62:28) in a time of 60:24 and placed him second on the all-time British list behind Mo Farah for the half-marathon, it’s clear Hawkins’ potential is considerable.
