WHEN David Moorcroft set the world record for 5000m in 1982, few would have thought it would remain the quickest by a British athlete for 29 years. It took someone of the calibre of Mo Farah to remove it from the books.

Moorcroft had represented Britain as a junior as early as 1971 and showed his strength when finishing runner-up over nine miles in the 1976 National despite missing the start.
