PARENTAL influence and support is a key factor in young athletes’ progression. Yet so often, parents’ over-enthusiasm extends to pressure that means children are more likely to quit the sport than succeed as seniors.
One report by Sport England claimed young people were put off sport partly as they perceived it becoming more serious than fun. And last year, psychologists at the University of Kent revealed many elite junior athletes feel pressure from their parents “to be perfect”.
