THE world of athletics has followed Seb Coe’s lead and leaped at the chance to make muchneeded change, with an overwhelming majority of 182- 10 voting in favour of a wholescale package of reforms at a special IAAF congress in Monaco on Saturday December 3.
Since campaigning for the IAAF presidency role which he won in August 2015, Coe has championed the need for reform within the global governing body amid a tumultuous two years for the sport, in which the IAAF itself has been dragged into doping and corruption scandals.
Among the wide-ranging proposals put forth by the Council, detailed in the IAAF’s ‘Time for Change’ document, is the decision to create an independent integrity unit to oversee all doping, integrity and disciplinary matters which will come into operation with a reformed integrity code of conduct on April 3, 2017.
