INCREDIBLE OTTO
OTTO PELTZER is one of athletics’ forgotten heroes. In the 1920s the German runner was a rival of Paavo Nurmi and competed in two Olympics but fell from grace under the Nazis and later achieved redemption coaching street children in India.
The story – entitled His Own Man – the biography of Otto Peltzer, Champion Athlete, Nazi Victim, Indian Hero – is co-written by Tim Johnston and Donald Macgregor.
Both GB Olympians, the former was eighth in the 1968 Olympic marathon in Mexico while the latter was seventh in the 1972 marathon in Munich.
Peltzer held world records for 800m, 1000m and 1500m but his homosexuality led him to being sent to ‘re-education’ for four years in the brutal KZ Mauthausen concentration camp.
