THE Athletics Weekly Athletes of the Year award for under-18 British athletes is to be jointly awarded to Aldershot, Farnham & District’s Stacey Burrows and Lucy Pygott, who tragically lost their lives on Tuesday November 8.
Burrows, 16, and Pygott, 17, died after they were hit by a car last Tuesday evening while out training on a club night. A 24-year-old serving soldier has been arrested and bailed in connection with their deaths.
AW was contacted by Great Britain’s European youth 1500m silver medallist Sabrina Sinha, last week on behalf of her fellow under-18 award nominees, who had come to the collective decision that they wished to see the honour awarded jointly to Burrows and Pygott as a tribute to the pair.
All nominees had been team-mates of Pygott at the European Youth Championships in Tbilisi earlier this year in July and included 800m champions George Mills and Isabelle Boffey, 200m winner Jona Efoloko, long jump winner Holly Mills, hammer silver medallist Jake Norris, heptathlon bronze medallist Niamh Emerson and 1500m winner Jake Heyward.
In her email to AW, Sinha said: “On behalf of Lucy’s Tbilisi family we would like to give this award to Lucy and Stacey not only in their memory but because these were two hard-working, talented and inspiring girls who will always be champions in our eyes.”
