Endurance training prompts beneficial changes within muscle cells
MARK SHEARMAN
YEARS of training can induce changes in the muscle structure of athletes that enable them to train harder, for longer.
Scientists have long known that the ability to perform endurance activity for long periods of time is down to to the energy production of mitochondria – the tiny ‘powerhouses’ of muscle cells.
Now, researchers from the University of Southern Denmark have discovered that the structure of mitochondria changes as years of distance training are clocked up. Joachim Nielsen, assistant professor of muscle physiology, examined 15 elite athletes and compared them with 29 people who either did no exercise or were moderately active.
All study subjects had a muscle biopsy which was later viewed under a special microscope that can detect even the tiniest changes in muscle structure.
