800M
MONDAY evening in the Estádio Olímpico at Rio 2016 was hardly a classic session for the first three-quarters of the night. Rain interrupted play as the weather deteriorated from the bright, sunny conditions and temperatures of 30-plus degrees seen earlier in the day. The crowd was small and did not have much to cheer apart from hurdles heats as they waited for a suspended pole vault to re-start.

David Rudisha: comfortable win
Then the 800m runners strode out on to the track – about 15 minutes late due to the weather – and the audience was treated to a great race. No one thought David Rudisha would run as well as he did in London 2012 when he set a world record of 1:40.91, but he had a pretty good crack as he powered to victory in 1:42.16 – a time only beaten himself, Wilson Kipketer, Seb Coe, Joaquim Cruz and Nijel Amos as he became the first man since New Zealander Peter Snell in 1964 to successfully defend the Olympic 800m title.
Much of this was thanks to Alfred Kipketer, who ran a super-fast – some would say suicidal – first 200m of 23.2 and opening lap of 49.23. It appeared to suit Rudisha perfectly, so much so that it initially looked suspiciously like Kenyan team tactics, although it was anything but.
“My plan was to run from the front as usual and I told this to my colleagues in the race – Ferguson Rotich and Alfred Kipketer,” said Rudisha. “But when the gun went Alfred decided to run the first 200m like a bullet.
