GB relay stalwart Martyn Rooney believes Matthew Hudson-Smith will rebound
MARK SHEARMAN
MARTYN ROONEY believes the 4x400m gold medal in Rio is currently “up for grabs” and has backed Matthew Hudson-Smith to come back stronger after a tough experience in Amsterdam on the anchor leg.
Great Britain came away with a bronze from the European Championships, finding themselves in first place until the final 40 metres where Hudson-Smith was caught by the chasing Polish and Belgian runners.
Rooney, who defended his individual European title but did not run in the relay, said: “It was a great opportunity to test guys out. We have the potential to pick up at least a bronze in Rio. There are even golds or silvers there to be had.”
For the 21-year-old Hudson-Smith the experience was a chastening one. Holding a comfortable lead, the British 400m champion tied up on the home straight under pressure, but Rooney believes the experience was a necessary one for the talented sprinter.
