❱ UNEQUAL MEDALS
AS I watched coverage of Team GB boarding the plane home from the Olympics in Rio, I couldn’t help feeling sorry for the members of the athletics team (apart from Mo Farah) because as non-gold medal winners they turned right as they entered the plane – not left into first class.
This enhanced treatment of gold medal-winners doesn’t surprise me and I suppose it is a justified reward for their hard work given the emphasis the country places on winning Olympic golds.
It is frustrating, however, that there seems to be a general perception (with the exception perhaps of the men’s 100m) that all gold medals are of equal worth.
Callum Hawkins and Andrew Butchart ran fantastically well to place in the top 10 of the marathon and 5000m but these achievements were hardly mentioned in the medal hype.
