TOUR OF TAMESIDE
THE second running after the return of this popular event saw 32-year-old Jordan athlete Mohammad Abu-Rezeq show his versatility with a clean sweep over the four races comprising road, fell and trail.
Abu-Rezeq finished with a winning margin of almost five minutes over veteran Gareth RavenL with Nathan Kilcourse more than three minutes further back.
It was on the road stages that the winner showed the greatest superiority, extending his lead over Raven by 1:41 over the High Peak half-marathon and by 2:46 in the Hyde 7. Abu-Rezeq also dealt comfortably with top athletes Andy Norman and Matt Bond, who were the respective runners-up but who did not feature in the series.
The first two events saw much closer finishes. The margin between the two protagonists was only four seconds in the cross-trail 10km and 15 seconds in the Copley fell race, in which Joe Steward and Kilcourse separated the pair.
The women’s events were dominated by W35 pair Kirsty Longley and Vicky Wright, the former winning by well over six minutes with Sarah Hudak some nine minutes back in third.
Although well beaten by Anna Lupton in the fell race, Longley was the first of the series-contesting finishers. She started with a modest lead of 18 seconds in the trail race but extended this by 2:46 in the fell race, 1:50 in the half-marathon and 1:49 in the Hyde 7 where another veteran, Emma Finney, took second ahead of Wright.
