EILIDH DOYLE has started 2016 with a bang. She won the Doha Diamond League 400m hurdles in 54.53 and then placed third in Rome in 54.81. It is a measure of how far Doyle has come that she was very dissatisfied with Rome, feeling she lost momentum in the middle of the race.
In her third Diamond race of this year, in Birmingham, she and Cassandra Tate both clocked 54.57. While Tate was given first place on the photo, many felt the image showed Doyle equal if not ahead of Tate. The three races have had quality fields, with Doyle defeating Kaliese Spencer of Jamaica in all of them and twice defeating 2015 World Championships bronze medallist Cassandra Tate.
Doyle, better known by her maiden name of Child until she was married in October 2015, is delighted with her early-season form. “I have always been notorious at opening up the season slowly,” she says. “But this year I didn’t want to do that. I wanted to get that monkey off my back. The winter had gone really well. I had no injury and no illness and no gaps. Normally you get a cold or something and miss a block of training but I had nothing. We went to Tenerife in February and my training went really well so I knew from my target times that I was in good shape. I went to Doha confident that I could run a fast time reflecting the shape that I was in. I wasn’t surprised at the time I ran. It was what I was expecting but I was surprised the way I won the race and I think I may have surprised some other people as well.”

Focused on Rio: the European 400m hurdles champion has a good chance of a medal at the Olympics
