Dan Bramble has marks from last year and jumped well indoors but has yet to impress this summer. The 2012 finalist Chris Tomlinson4 has shown even less form this year in an event with IAAF spaces available.
In the triple jump, there have been no qualifiers this summer though both defending champion Julian Reid and 2008 Olympian Nathan Douglas did so last year and Reid has jumped a windy 16.96m this summer so is capable.
MEN’S THROWS
Shot (20.50). IAAF target: 32. 37 already qualified.
Discus (65.00). IAAF target:
32. 31 already qualified. Hammer (77.00). IAAF target:
32. 20 already qualified. Javelin (83.00). IAAF target:
32. 33 already qualified.
IN THE shot, Scott Lincoln has greatly improved to 19.59m this summer. The Rio standard isn’t realistic yet but he will surely retain his title.
The discus standard is yet another not compatible with the track marks, though Brett Morse and NCAA champion Nick Percy should at least provide a good contest even if Rio selection is beyond them.
The hammer is where the IAAF got it totally wrong – only 14 non-Russians have gained the standard in 2016. World finalist Nick Miller achieved it last year and has come close with a 76.93m this summer and is certain to go to Brazil whatever happens.
Mark Dry is ranked in the world top 20 and within range of the mark and both he and Chris Bennett – after a big 76.45m PB in Budapest at the weekend – are in the IAAF top 32. It will be a travesty if neither are added to the British team when both are ranked so high.
In the javelin, Britain will be unrepresented in Rio with no one within seven metres of the standard and Matti Mortimore starts marginal favourite over junior Harry Hughes who should at least be a factor in 2020.
WOMEN’S SPRINTS
100m (11.32). IAAF target: 56. 61 already qualified.
200m (23.20). IAAF target: 56. 70 already qualified.
400m (52.20). IAAF target: 48. 57 already qualified.
