SUPPORTING EUROPE WHATEVER happens in the Euro referendum, I hope British athletics and athletics won’t leave Europe in terms of the championships in Amsterdam next month. A Europeans the same year as an Olympics may be bizarre but other nations are taking them seriously, therefore so should we.
Some potential Olympians who won’t get near semi-finals or top 20 in Rio should think the Europeans might offer more success this year.

GERMAN THROWERS IN FORM
GERMANY
German Championships, Kassel, June 18/19
GERMAN throwers showed they will lead their country’s challenge in Rio. They have genuine medal prospects in seven of the eight throws, the exception being the men’s hammer.
Defending Olympic champion Robert Harting looks back to his very best as he went out to 68.04m in the last round to come within 11 centimetres of Piotr Malachowski’s world-leading mark.
His younger brother, Christoph, was second with 66.41m and Daniel Jasinki (65.18m) third.
Christin Hussong set a lifetime best and German under-23 record of 66.41m to win a quality javelin event ahead of world champion Katharina Molitor (62.86m) and Linda Stahl (61.44m), with Christina Obergfoll only fourth (59.93m).
Thomas Rohler threw 86.81m to win the javelin from Julan Weber’s 83.79m, while David Storl won the shot with 20.75m ahead of Tobias Dahm’s 20.38m PB.
Betty Heidler won the hammer with a 75.32m throw, while Nadine Muller won the discus with 65.79m and world champion Christina Schwanitz improved her season’s best to 19.49m to win the shot.
Away from the throws, a topquality pole vault was won by Martina Strutz’s 4.70m as Silke Spiegelburg no-heighted.
However, there was nothing else of medal quality in the jumps and the track performances probably reached an all time-low.

World indoor champ Kamila Licwinko equalled the world high jump lead with 1.97m and then improved to 1.99m. Junior Konrad Bukowiecki was over 21 metres again in the shot as he defeated Michal Haratyk and Tomasz Majewski.

JIMMY VICAUT appeared to win the 100m in 9.98, but the race was discounted as he and two others did not hear a recall gun. Ten minutes later he won easily in 10.08.
James Dasaolu and Richard Kilty tied for third in a slow 10.31 but Dasaolu had run 10.15 in his earlier race.
Britain enjoyed some success, although Darryl Neita won the 100m in an Olympic qualifying 11.30 with Asha Philip an off-form fourth, while Lawrence Clarke won the hurdles in 13.42 and Lynsey Sharp won a slow 800m.
However, fellow Scot Eilidh Doyle lost to Denmark´s Sara Petersen’s 55.20. Switzerland’s Nichole Buchler won the pole vault with a 4.70m leap while Valerie Adams took the shot with 19.37m to show she is getting back to form.

CONWAY IS TOP OF THE WORLD
SLOVENIA
WMRA Long Distance Mountain Running Championship, Podbro, June 18
ANNiE CONWAY enjoyed the race of her life to win by nearly a minute over the tough 42,195km course which had a total of 2800m of climbing.
She was four minutes down on the leading group after the first checkpoint at 7km and was still more than three minutes behind Italian Antonella Confortola with 5km remaining.
However, the Briton finished strongly to come through to victory in a time of 4:29:01 to take the gold medal by less than a minute.
She said: “It’s a bit of a shock at the moment, but it’s a good feeling. I climbed quite well from the start on the second climb, and I caught the second lady (Lucija Krkoc of Slovenia) at the top of the last summit and then I caught Antonella (Confortola of Italy) with 3km to go on the descent, so I just kept going and thought, ‘right, I can’t lose this position now’.”
Victoria Wilkinson came through in 4:45:33 for 14th place while Helen Berry was close behind in 18th; crossing the line in 4:49:28.
Tom Owens was fourth in an Italian-dominated men’s race won by Alessandro Rambaldini. Rambaldini also came through over the closing stages and won by 80 seconds, having trailed the other medallists by more than four minutes at 27km.
Owens finished in 3:49:34 while the rest of the British men’s team packed in the top 16.
Ricky Lightfoot, was sixth and Andrew Davies ninth.
