WAS this the huge surprise that many have suggested?
Winner Vivian Cheruiyot had run the third fastest-ever time in the 10,000m earlier in the week in winning the silver medal and set a near one-minute PB.
She is also the reigning world 10,000m champion and had previously won a world championships distance double. She was in the shape of her life but still hungry to win her first Olympic title.
But the Kenyan wasn’t the favourite – that was world 5000m champion Almaz Ayana, who had smashed the world 10,000m record earlier in the week, running the second half in 14:30 compared to the individual Olympic record of 14:40.79.

Not one to conserve energy she had blasted the second half of her heat completely unnecessarily. Perhaps that made a difference as her rivals showed more tactical awareness in qualifying.
