IT WAS a morning of successful title defences on day five as, just after Christian Taylor claimed his second gold in the triple jump, Sandra Perkovic did the same in the discus.
As in qualifying, the Croatian started shakily with two fouls. But while in that respect the start of the final might have been similar to the qualification for the eventual winner, the conditions couldn’t have been more different. Although a heavy rain storm paused qualifying the evening before, conditions for the final were hot and bright.
Not only was the weather challenging, but the fact that the qualifying round and final were held only around 12 hours apart was another element for the athletes to take on board.
