CASTER SEMENYA had been one of the biggest gold medal favourites of the Games and the South African duly delivered, clocking a 1:55.28 national record to go one better than her silver from London 2012.
ALL-TIME LIST
Taking 0.05 from her own South African record, the 25-year-old beat Burundi’s world indoor champion Francine Niyonsaba, who clocked 1:56.49, and Kenya’s world indoor bronze medallist Margaret Wambui (1:56.89).
Finishing just outside the medals, Melissa Bishop broke the Canadian record with 1:57.02 for fourth and a fine run by Britain’s Lynsey Sharp saw her improve her Scottish record to 1:57.69 for sixth.

Shelayna Oskan-Clarke: reached the semi-final
“It was just a fantastic race,” said Semenya. “The girls running were really good so it was a good feeling. Obviously in the race there will always be one winner, so it turns out good for me.
“It was not all about running fast,” added the 2009 world champion, despite her time putting her 11th on the world all-time list. “It was about running a good race. I came here and I wanted to run a good championship.”
