BEKELE MISSES OUT ON RECORD
ETHIOPIAN FALLS SIX SECONDS SHORT OF WORLD RECORD AFTER THRILLING RACE WITH WILSON KIPSANG

Kenenisa Bekele and Wilson Kipsang: memorable clash on streets of Germany
KENENISA BEKELE came close to adding the world marathon record to the marks he already holds at 5000m and 10,000m on the track after an exciting last mile.
The great Ethiopian had to come from behind to pip former world record-holder Wilson Kipsang and his time of 2:03:03 left him six seconds short of Dennis Kimetto’s global mark set on this course in 2014.
The time was the second fastest in history on a record-eligible course and bettered Haile Gebrselassie’s Ethiopian record of 2:03:59.
The race started fast – ridiculously so – and the leaders shot through the opening kilometre in 2:40, which works out at 1:53 pace for the full distance!
By 5km (14:20), the pace has settled down but was still inside world-record schedule as a large pack of mostly Kenyans loped along.

Once again the freakishly-fast Berlin course produced a super-quick time

The tempo slowed very slightly at 10km as the big pack passed it in 29:00 with Bekele now up to third and the 20km time of 58:01 and halfway mark of 61:11 showed they were still comfortably on world record pace and faster than Kimetto managed two years ago in his record run.
