Kadeena Cox: one of Britain’s big stars in Rio
JUST days before the British Paralympic team jetted off from its holding camp in Belo Horizonte to Rio, head coach Paula Dunn called on her 54-strong team to pounce on the opportunity presented by the blanket ban imposed by the International Paralympic Committee. So did they?
If world rankings were anything to go by then Kadeena Cox in the T38 400m, Richard Whitehead in the T42 100m, F31/32 club thrower Stephen Miller and Sabrina Fortune in the F20 shot put finished higher than the rankings suggested they may have.
However, Cox, in just her second year as a para-athlete and first in the T38 category, excelled without the defending world 400m champion Margarita Goncharova present and smashed her world record with a 60.71 victory, while also taking third in the 100m in 12.98 – faster than the Russian has ever run the distance and Cox’s first run under 13 seconds since her stroke and multiple sclerosis diagnosis last year.
Measuring against the World Championship performances of Russia in Doha from 2015 show ParalympicsGB to have picked up a few more medals.
