It’s been a real privilege to put together an issue of Attitude that celebrates bachelors — because it’s great to be reminded that as gay men we too can now get married. But at the same time, defining gay men by their marriage status opens up all kinds of issues that can provoke a variety of reactions.

Of course, it’s not that long since the euphemism “confirmed bachelor’ was used to describe men who had one particularly strong reason for not wanting to settle down with a woman.

And there were those of us who revelled in our outsider status and the privileges this could bring — just as there are those of us now who lament its passing and see marriage as something anathema to our culture.
