I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times I’ve left the UK — the idea of discovering new cultures and people always appealing more than the actual execution. As much as travel can elevate us, it can also remind us of how lucky we are to live where we do.
A decade ago, obsessed to perverse heights with Patricia Highsmith’s Ripley novels, I took myself on a solo endeavour around Italy. Perhaps the romantic in me believed I might bag my own Dickie Greenleaf, a rather unpleasant, care-free trustafarian with a high libido.
