MOST PEOPLE WHO DECIDE TO REINVENT THEMSELVES after 15 years as a successful singer-songwriter might be nervous. But that’s not the case for house music afficionado Peyton. “I’m not because in my heart I know I couldn’t have done better”, he says of his new album, which sees him ditch dance beats in favour of a rather-more soulful sound.
Peyton adds: “At some point you just have to step back and say: ‘I don’t have better than this to give’. I don’t believe for one second that it won’t succeed because I feel we have to manifest success. But if it doesn’t take off in the way I want, it won’t be because I haven’t done my best.” A fixture in dance charts around the world since his debut A Higher Place hit it big in 2003, Peyton is best known in non-industry circles as the man who, despite being described as “just incredible” by Simon Cowell on X Factor in 2016, was booted off the show by Sharon Osbourne in favour of Honey G. More than a year on, the artist formerly known as Christopher (he dropped his full moniker in favour of his snappier sounding surname), isn’t bitter. Grateful that his time on the show helped boost his profile beyond house aficionados, the 47-year-old singer is excited about his new musical direction. Elements of soul and gospel have always been a part of the son of a preacher man’s output.
