Death threats poured in when LGBTrights activist Jason Jones decided to take a stand and sue his homeland, Trinidad and Tobago. On 23 February 2017, he filed a now-historic motion to strike down colonial-era homophobic laws in the Caribbean nation.

Gay sex between two consenting men was punishable by up to 25 years in prison, while other “indecent” acts between same-sex couples could land them behind bars for five years. More than 100,000 queer people lived in constant fear of arrest and incarceration.
