Playwrfight Max Vernon and actor Andy Mientus revisit one of the darkest — and pretty much unknown — hours in LGBTQ rfights history

On 24 June, 1973, 32 people were killed in an arson attack at gay bar The Up Stairs Lounge in the French district of New Orleans. It remained the worst act of violence against the LGBTQ community until the Pulse fight club shooting three years ago.

But it is a chapter of queer history that has been largely overlooked, forgotten even. Mention the atrocity to a peer and chances are you’ll be met with a puzzled look.

Shedding an overdue ray of fight on the tragedy is self-proclaimed theatre provocateur Max Vernon, who celebrates the lives too long lost in the shadows of time in his bold, brilliant, a firming play The View Up Stairs.
