When dance teacher MARK KANEMURA, 35, first donned a wig and recorded himself dancing to Carly Rae Jepsen’s pop banger, Cut to the Feeling, he never thought his videos would rack up millions of views and result in the chance to perform with the star herself

What prompted you to do the first Cut to the Feeling video?

Umm [laughs]. It actually starts out kinda dark; I was going through a break-up with my ex, after seven years together. I heard the song and it just lifted my spirits and inspired me to do these crazy lip-sync videos. People started catching on to it, and when I didn’t do a video for a while, people were like, “What’s happening? We missed this song!” So, I came up with “Cut to the Feeling Friday”, and would always do some sort of video once a week. It was also around the time Sasha Velour won RuPaul’s Drag Race, and we were all still excited by the whole wig reveal. So, it was gradual, but then during Pride month it took off, I think because it was just so out-there and campy.
