Letter from the Editor

AH, LOVE AND RELATIONSHIPS. Dominant in culture. There to be aspired to. Harder than you may imagine. Important to most of us.

Marriage equality has meant gay relationships have come out of the closet, are now celebrated in the open and are no longer ‘discreet’, thank god, in the way they’ve often been in decades gone past. But frustratingly, they are still woefully underrepresented in the media. Think about it. There’s Elton and David, Ellen and Portia, Dustin and Tom, Neil Patrick Harris and his husband David Burtka, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and his hubbie Justin Mikita, Claire Balding and wife Alice Arnold, Charlie Condou and husband Cameron Laux and a handful of others – and that’s about it. There are far less famous gay couples than straight ones. Like, obviously. To an extent it’s a numbers thing. But culture still isn’t fully embracing of us.

About Attitude

The new issue of Attitude features Olympic skier Gus Kenworthy on the cover, with an exclusive interview in which he discusses life since coming out. Inside we have a Valentine’s special where we look at the broad spectrum of gay relationships, plus columns and advice on dating as transgender, HIV positive, masc, femme, and everything in between. There are also interviews with British actor Douglas Booth and Australian singer songwriter Josef Salvat. Our writer Matt Cain goes home to Bolton for the city’s first Pride, and we chat to our new columnist Juno Dawson about her transition. We also have a feature on the forgotten gay language, polari.
