7 Years is not your average pop song. It’s not about sex, money or falling in love. It was written after Danish singer/songwriter Lukas Graham’s father passed away in 2012, aged 61. Like most people who have experienced a similar pain will tell you, losing a father is life-changing if you looked up to that man as a role model. The evidence would suggest many people relate because the song has been the band’s key to international success, topping the charts not only in Denmark but also Norway, Sweden, Austria, Australia, New Zealand and the UK. It has made their outspoken frontman, Lukas Graham Forchhammer, 27, a recognisable face, and presumably influential to their young fans.
I meet the band at the Universal Records building in west London. Forchhammer is slung back in his chair, left leg thrown over the armrest, rock star-like. I ask how writing 7 Years helped him deal with his loss. “It’s hard to come to terms with losing your gender role model,” he says. “But it’s also cathartic to put into perspective what my dad gave me, and my wonderful life.”
