What’s the story, Morning Gloria?

Lorraine Kelly, the queen of daytime TV and Attitude Honorary Gay Award-winner, is given the royal treatment as she drags up to celebrate her 60th birthday and 35 years of broadcasting

The term “national treasure” gets bandied about a lot these days, often in connection with celebs who are wholly undeserving of such a title, or sometimes deserving of it for just a fleeting moment. Of course, true, lasting national-treasure status often comes during a person’s golden age, at which point they’re also likely to be a Sir or a Dame — think Attenborough, Dench, Smith, Mirren and co.

But some stars get there earlier, such as TV’s eternal optimist and longtime LGBTQ ally Lorraine Kelly, whose 60th birthday at the end of November prompted her to tick offanother bucket-list item and become a drag queen for a day, for both our cover shoot and a segment on her long-running ITV show.

A big fan of drag (she notably guest-judged Drag Race UK’s Snatch Game episode), Lorraine enlisted the help of the Family Gorgeous, the stars of Channel 4 series Drag SOS, to transform her into alter-ego Morning Gloria. Taking her nickname, the “Queen of Daytime TV”, as inspiration, the five queens created a dramatic if-Queen-Elizabeth-Iwas- dressed-by-Vivienne-Westwood look that captured Lorraine’s spirit and received her royal assent.

Cheddar Gorgeous, co-founder of the Manchester-based troupe, says: “What’s interesting about Lorraine is that she’s such a vibrant and alive person, and I think sometimes she doesn’t get the opportunity to let that person out on TV because people expect a certain amount of conformity.
