The iconic Hollywood sign used to be just a little bit longer. When it was in the hills above LA. Intended to last just a year and a half, the sign was Los Angeles Times publisher Harry Chandler as an epic $21,000 billboard. It soon took on the role of celebratory symbol for a city that was constantly announcing its glittering success. In 1949, it went on a diet and shed the ‘land’ part, becoming the sign we know and love today.
