Bordering on perfection

San Diego offers great food, beautiful sights and a striking coastline, and as a bonus, it’s within striking range of Tijuana in Mexico
A WALK IN THE PARK: Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve
NO QUARTER GIVEN: The Gaslight Quarter comes alive at night

I’m worried we are going to capsize as our kayak is hit by a wave and the nose shoots up almost vertical. The young lady at the front of the two-person boat is screaming and looks as if she’s going to career back into my face. Luckily, I don’t have to rely on my helmet to prevent our skulls cracking together because we make it over the inal crest of the waves before crashing into calmer waters of San Diego’s coast in one piece. We follow our guide from Everyday California, who looks as if he was nabbed from an Abercrombie & Fitch catalogue, towards the Seven Sea Caves but just as we near them, my kayak companion asks to turn back because she thinks she’s going to be sick. It seems a shame to go back early but the look she gives our guide when he suggests getting into the sea to combat the seasickness is so ierce that I’m not going to argue.
