What are the best engines ever conceived in Italy? That’s the question we’re attempting to answer in a major two-part feature. This month it’s engines from two to six cylinders, and we’ve nominated a stellar congregation: Fiat-Abarth 595, Lancia integrale twin cam, Alfa GTV ‘Nord’, Fiat Coupé 20v Turbo and Alfa 147 GTA V6 Busso. We also ask another big question this month: was it Ferrari and Pininfarina or Lamborghini and Bertone that triumphed in the epic battle for design supremacy that ran from 1965 to 1980, from Miura to Berlinetta Boxer? We road-test Maserati’s Merak SS and feature Alfa Romeo strongly, too, with the otherworldly Alfa ‘BAT’ concepts of the 1950s, the Alfa 155 Q4 and the latest 2020 Stelvio. We’ve also been out and about a lot, driving an Abarth 595 esseesse in the Alps and witnessing Classic Alfa and Historic racing series, as well as reporting on some of the world’s best show cars at Salon Privé, Concours of Elegance and Italian Wings & Wheels.
