With culinary TV hits such as Extreme Cake Makers and the GreatBritish Bake Off taking prime time TV slots, it’s clear that baking has won the hearts of the British public. However, what is also interesting is that, with the rise in baking, it seems to have transcended its original purpose and become a useful therapy tooi.
Ahead of its Bake for Heroes (www.bakeforheroes.org.uk) campaign during Armed Forces Week from 22nd to 29Ü1 June, Help for Heroes commissioned YouGovto undertake research into the connections between baking and mental health - something the charity was already conscious of, having found baking and culinary therapy to be a useful tooi to aid the recovery of Veterans who have sustained life-changing injuries or illnesses.
The results of the research showed clearly that baking is becoming increasingly popular as a way to improve wellbeing, with one in five (22%) UK adults saying that theyfind baking therapeutic. One in six (17%) of those polled think baking is a great way to deal with stress and anxiety, while 15% believe it’s beneficial to their mental wellbeing.
Multi-award winning cake artist and star of Channel 4’s Extreme CakeMakers series, Rosie Dummer(AKA Rosie Cake-Diva) has been working with Help for Heroes to encourage Brits to run a Bake for Heroes bake sale - encourage friends, family, work colleagues and classmates to make, sell, buy and eat cake - to have fun and raise funds for the charity.
