As one of the UK’s most acclaimed actresses, Dame Emma Thompson DBE, has appeared in numerous blockbusting films from Love Actually, Nanny McPhee, and 101 Dalmatians. But films aside, her outspoken views on human rights and environmentalism are what make her one of our 2019 heroes.
As a supporter of Greenpeace, and as part of her campaign against climate change in January 2009, she and three other members of the organisation bought land near the village of Sipson to deter the building of a third runway at Heathrow Airport. More recently in 2018, she was the voice to Greenpeace’s and Iceland’s infamous anti palm oil advert that was subsequently banned as it was deemed to be in favour of a political issue. Plus, she has also shown support for Extinction Rebellion and attended their protests back in April. In fact, Emma even said that she wanted to be part of those demonstrators arrested by the police. Despite this, she was criticised for flying 5,400 miles from LA to London for the protests. She gave a dignified response saying: “The fact of the matter is, everyone has been asking for clean energy for decades – this demand has been made for decades and it has been ignored for decades. If I could fly cleanly, I would.”
