I’D COUNTED SOMEWHERE IN the region of 18, or maybe even 20 curves so far, of an estimated 1,864 of these gradient deviants woven into the mountain road between Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son in the far north of Thailand.

All signs of civilisation had gone by now, apart from the endless chain of coffee shops lining this remote mountain road. Dense forest surrounded the twisted alpine like road, which parted every few minutes to reveal a huge green mountainous roller coaster to either side, stretching way out towards the border with Myanmar.

The granny gear was already well and truly bedding itself in, and there was just one solitary sprocket left in reserve—and that was about to be called to action.

When people think of Thailand it’s generally the islands and beaches of the south that spring to mind, followed by the infamous Bangkok nightlife. Yet this, the extreme north of the country, is a world apart; it’s true wild jungle and mountain country.
