Workshop l Adjust Your Gears

THE REAR DERAILLEUR

If your gear adjustment is out, there’s a good chance that you’ll only need to tweak the cable tension to pull it back into line. Still, it’s worth getting familiar with the whole system, just in case you’re dealing with a bigger problem. Start by checking the limit screws; they restrict the side-to-side movement of the derailleur and prevent the chain from dropping off the end of the cassette or being tossed into the spokes. Their location will vary from one derailleur to the next but they are usually marked with an ‘H’ and an ‘L’.

Start by checking the high limit screw on the rear derailleur—this is the one marked ‘H’. Press the cable release lever 10 or 11 times whilst turning the pedals forward, the derailleur should sit directly above the smallest cog on your rear cassette. If the derailleur has a tendency to pull the chain off the end of the cassette and into the frame, tighten the H adjustment screw (clockwise). If the chain won’t drop into the smallest cog on the rear cassette, loosen the H adjustment screw (anti-clockwise).
