Neil van der Ploeg

FROM AN ACTIVE CYCLING FAMIY OF SEVEN, NEIL VAN DER PLOEG HAS ALWAYS BEEN A LIVE WIRE. AFTER RECENTLY WINNING THE ITT IN TOUR OF CHINA 1 HE SPOKE WITH KAREN FORMAN ABOUT HIS CAREER TO DATE.

A Life Behind Bars

BICYCLING AUSTRALIA: Where are you now for this interview and why?

NEIL VAN DER PLOEG: Sitting in a hotel room above a very noisy Chinese roundabout. Over here horns replace indicating, and are used to warn other cars that you are near. Think of wind chimes but with car horns. We are here for two crazy UCI 2.1 tours (same as the Sun Tour) simply named “Tour of China 1” and “Tour of China 2”.

BA: Where do you live?

NVDP: I currently live on the bike, which takes me all over the place, but Albury is where the home base is.

BA: Do other family members ride?

NVDP: Yes they do. Of my five brothers, four ride and so do both parents. Most have raced pretty seriously at some point, mainly on the mountain bike, but a bit on the road too.
