This month B+W has a distinctly nostalgic feel as we look to the past for inspiration. Frank Roosendaal’s tribute to the Romany people captures both their vitality and our imaginations; Mark Bentley investigates how the legacy of atrocities committed during World War II inspired such a moving collection of images.

Tracy Hallett extends a helping hand to snap happy bargain hunters everywhere as she lays out what to look for in second-hand equipment. Colin Harding also casts his mind back to by-gone days in Amsterdam as he cunningly uses his family holiday to explore the work of nineteenth century photographer Benjamin Brecknell Turner. Meanwhile, our favourite editor embarks on her very own homage to film as she gets all misty-eyed testing the Lomo LC-Wide. Perhaps technology and film can live happily-ever-after, but will she fall for its romantic charms?

The much maligned third dimension is the focus of ‘how to’ this month when Lee Frost discusses that all-important photographic ally, perspective. Also adding to our basket of tricks is Tim Daly who shows us how to make a photo newspaper.

Steering the September issue far away from the dangers of sentimentality is Roderick Field who talks to portrait photographer Andrew Florides about why ‘boys will be boys’ and the specific challenges of capturing the male face. Across the pond we join Susan Burnstine as she meditates on two exciting photographers from Portland, Oregon. Whilst, back in Blighty, B+W also embrace the new, without forgetting the old, as we investigate Canon’s latest entry level DSLR. Is the EOS 600D really all that different from its predecessor?
