Ahead of his 11th pro ight, James Moorcroft tells John Evans how he went from unlicensed ighter to prospect

Highlighting the best of the week’s stories

WHEN James Moorcroft decided to step away from the shadowy world of unlicensed boxing and into the bright lights of the professional sport, battling against the preconceptions that dog fighters who enter the pro ranks without the traditional amateur grounding was the least of the 26-year-old welterweight’s worries. The Wiganer was more concerned with simply winning his first fight and making his trainer, former Central Area super-welter champ Lee Blundell, proud. Two years have passed since his debut and Moorcroft has strung together 10 consecutive victories, becoming more poised and polished with each performance. So far, Moorcroft has worked his way through the who’s who list of journeymen, but the manner of his performances have caused both he and his promoter, Steve Wood, to reassess their targets. After starting out as an inexperienced trier, there is a growing belief that, given the right fights at the right times, Moorcroft may just possess the ability to compete at title level.
