IT is very rare for a boxer to become a genuine national figure, one who transcends the trade and is loved by the British public whatever the outcome of their contests. Len Harvey came close to such recognition in the 1930s and Freddie Mills certainly achieved it during his colourful post-war career. Once his fighting days were over, Freddie went on to be a regular on chat shows on national television, and in today’s parlance, he was an ‘A-list celebrity’. The last fighter that I can recall making a similar impression on the public was Frank Bruno. Another heavyweight, Henry Cooper, is the only other boxer who I think warrants inclusion to this very exclusive club.
