Virgil Hunter speaks to John Dennen about Amir’s chances, Dominic Breazeale and Chris Eubank Jnr

ON Saturday (April 20) Amir Khan will have Virgil Hunter back in his corner when he takes on brilliant WBO welterweight champion Terence Crawford at Madison Square Garden in New York. Hunter has recovered from a life threatening illness and speaks candidly here about Khan’s merits as a fighter, the damage from fighting Canelo Alvarez and how Khan will fare in this crucial contest.

How has it been recovering and getting back to the gym?

Everything’s been great I’m 100 percent recovered.

Been back in the gym for over a full year now and I haven’t missed a beat. Just thankful everything turned out all right and that I’ve regained my strength and it’s been restored to me through the good Lord.

Long story short, I had an allergic reaction to some medication that caused me to go into a diabetic coma. And I was in a coma for several days, came out of it and started the process [of coming] back.

It was just an allergic reaction to a pill that I was taking for my back. It caused my blood sugar to shoot up quick so that’s basically the substance of the story. I had to learn how to walk again, it took me two-and-ahalf months of really of intensive physical therapy to regain my strength.
